    “Perfect mountain Ryokan!”

This Ryokan is fantastic! I was a solo traveller, with tattoos, and this was the perfect Ryokan for me! There are public and private onsen, the private onsen can be used as long as the sign out key is in the lobby, and there was always one available when I wanted to use the private onsen! The food was traditional, very filling, and was different each of the 2 nights I stayed. The building is a bit old, but I found it gave the place so much character. One thing to keep in mind is that the place is very isolated, I was hanging out in Takayama each day, which is a 1.5 hour bus ride with the last bus being at 6:40pm (almost missed it and it gave me a heart attack). I loved the isolation, being in the mountains on a misty rainy day was so relaxing. The owner does not speak much English, but there was a staff member who showed me around and helped me out a lot. The owner was very kind and was glad to hear I didn't miss the last bus! I'm sad to leave, and I would reccomend this Ryokan to anybody who's willing to look past minor flaws to appreciate the total experience of a cozy Ryokan in the Hida mountains :)

    “Such a beautiful place”

Great place to stay if you want to be near nature! The room is clean, and the tatami mats are really good. The food is one of the best things there! Dinner and breakfast was really delicious. The outdoor bath has mountain view, during the night stars can be seen clearly.

    Reviewed July 27, 2025

Thank you very much for your kind and thoughtful review. Ryokan Yakenoyu is not a flashy or luxurious place, but rather a small, simple, countryside inn where guests can relax and experience the warmth of rural Japan and the beauty of nature. We are truly happy that you felt comfortable with us. We are also glad you enjoyed our meals and the mountain-view outdoor bath, especially the starry night sky — that is one of the charms of this area. By the way, every year from February 1st to 10th, the local “Nakao Kamakura Festival” is held here in the village. Snow lanterns and small snow huts light up the town, creating a very peaceful and magical winter atmosphere. If you ever visit us during that time, we are sure you will enjoy it. We sincerely hope to welcome you again to our little countryside ryokan.

    “Everything is satisfying.”

I stayed at a senior plan with a limited number of dishes for those over 60, but one after another, freshly baked and fried dishes were served, resulting in more items than I had expected. From my room, I had a view of the Northern Alps, and the particularly distinctive pointed Tori-boshi-yama left a strong impression on me. The hot spring was a free-flowing source, which was almost too luxurious. Thank you to all the kind staff.

“It was very good at a reasonable price.”

I stayed for one night as accommodation for a snowboarding trip. I didn't have high expectations due to the poor reviews, but it was good as a place for a solo male traveler! Since it was a weekday, it was quiet, and I could enjoy unlimited access to the hot springs (although the outdoor one was freezing...). The meals were plentiful, and I felt full afterwards. I was a bit surprised that the staff, including the landlady, were all foreigners, but I just thought it was the way things are in this era, so it didn't bother me that much. Personally, I would like to use it again.

“It is accommodation located near Shinkotaka Station.”

Overall, the accommodation is acceptable with some areas needing improvement. It is a ryokan-style stay located in a hot spring area. There is free parking and breakfast included in the booking price. There is an outdoor onsen and separate indoor baths for men and women. However, it would be great if they could provide seating in the onsen room. There are no hair dryers available in the onsen, and no lotions provided. Improving these points would make a big difference. The outdoor bath is about 20 meters away from the accommodation building and is private. The breakfast is good, tasty, and fulfilling for the price. One thing that needs improvement is that the bedding should be set up for guests instead of having them do it themselves after a tiring journey. The owner was welcoming. The travel requires driving up a mountain, but the accommodation is conveniently located not far from the cable car station.
